Tiquismos (Costa Rica sayings):

Andar con el moco caído – to be sad or down
Bicha – a motorcycle
Canear – to be in jail
Catrinearse – means to dress up in good clothes
Chanear – to get dressed up or spruce up something like polish a car or remodel a house.
Colmillo – most often refers to a fang (tooth). We use it here to refer to a person that is astute or someone who is good in business. Tener colmillo or colmilludo is what is used to describe a person with said qualities.
Comerse la presa – means to be stuck in a traffic jam
Cuete – a handgun. We also use Chopo or cohete for handgun
Ganarse los frijoles – is to earn a living. Ganar la vida is used more frequently
Huaquero or guaquero – a person who robs artifacts form an Indian’s grave
Mami – most often used for mother, however it is used to refer to one’s wife, lover or a beautiful woman. Estar muy mami means a woman who is sexy or attractive. As we say here bien rica.
La voló or la sacó del estadio – to screw something up. A vulgar way of saying the same thing is Se cagó en la olla de leche. Don’t say it!
Mujerear – to chase women
Se le fue la yunta – your mate (male or female) left you for good.
Patineto – a skateboarder. Patinetero is the correct word.
La Pelona – death like the Grim Reaper or Angel of Death
Pomada de canario – a type of cure-it-all used in the old days
Ponerle bonito or jugarsela – is to manage or make do with something
Salvatandas – a savior or someone who gets you out of a jam
Sapear – to accuse or tell on someone
Se le mete el diablo – to get very angry or go temporarily crazy
Todo terreno – literally this term refers to a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Figuratively it means a person who is very versatile or good at many different tasks.
turisTICOS – is an adjective referring to tourism. However here it is a play on words that means tico tourists.
Vaciar el saco – to get something off one’s chest. Desahogarse is the correct way to say this.
