Chori – short for chorizo which we used for almost any type of illegal business. Chorizo literally means a type of pork sausage.
Contentera – happiness
Cuesta de enero – refers to the uphill battle in January to pay all of one’s, bills, debts and other obligations. After spending a lot of money during the Christmas holidays a lot of ticos are short of money in January.
Dipu – short for diputado or a member of congress. Also called hijueputados (very insulting and vulgar)
Fut – short for futbol or soccer.
Gajo – an old car
El or la Presi – short for president.
Enfriar un carro robado – to hide a stolen car while things cool down.
Jumarse – to get drunk
Lata – an old bus
Machete – literally a machete knife but we use it to refer to someone’s tools of the trade. A taxi driver’s car would be his machete.
Pelliscarse – to get smart or wise up. Ponerse vivo means the same thing.
Plomear – to shoot someone. Comes from plomo which means lead.
Rajar – to brag in Costa Rica. It literally means to crack or split something
Rayar – to pass another car. Adelantar and pasar are more correct.
Soñar despierto – to day dream
Tafies – slang for fiestas or parties
Ticada – ticos use this term to refer to any stupid behavior by another tico.
Volar filazos – to get into a knife fight

Tiquismos –
Estar con toda la pata – to be well or fine
Juntos y revueltos – to be in a relationship
Jalarle las orejas a alguien – to scold someone
