Happy (contento/a, feliz and alegre)
- Brincar de una pata literally means to hop on one foot or jumping with joy.
- Como niño con juguete nuevo is as happy as a child with a new toy. We also say como niño con zapatos nuevos which means like a child with a new pair of shoes.
- Cagado/a de risa is a vulgar way to express being happy.
- Con cerveza no hay tristeza means with beer you won’t be sad.
- Estar como hormiga en tapa de dulce is as happy as an ant on a dried, unrefined, large cube of naturally evaporated sugar cane juice.
- Feliz como lombriz means as happy as a worm.
- Feliz de la vida is also happy.
- Fuera de órbita is out of orbit because you are happy.
- Panza llena, corazón contento is when your stomach is full you are happy.
- Sonrisa de oreja a oreja is an ear to ear smile.
Sad (triste)
- Ahuevado is to be bummed out in Costa Rican slang.
- Tener una cara larga is to have a long, sad face.
- Con copa vacía no hay alegría is that without liquor in you glass you won’t be happy.
- Con el moco caído is to be sad.
- Decaído is to feel down.
- Deprimido is to be depressed.
- Infeliz is to be unhappy or a poor devil
- Más triste que un burro en lancha is to be more unhappy than a donkey on a boat.
- Ni el sol le calienta is to be very sad.
